Winnipeg Jets 4 Toronto Maple Leafs 2 (Jets 35-34-10, 18-18-4 road) – After getting mathematically eliminated from the playoff race Thursday, the Jets talked about finishing the season playing the right way, establishing good habits and playing for each other. Patrick Omameh Jersey . Considering everything, it was a very solid effort and a character win by the Jets. The loss leaves the Leafs out of a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, in what was their final home game of the season. Jets played without Evander Kane, coachs decision, then lost the services of Dustin Byfuglien late in the second with an upper body injury. Jets got great efforts from pretty much the entire lineup. The Leafs opened the scoring, Phil Kessel with his 37th on a great pass from Tyler Bozak. Bryan Little with his 23rd tied the game less than four minutes later, assists to Michael Frolik and Mark Stuart. Little had his seven game point streak snapped Thursday, but with the goal is 3-6-9 in his last nine. The Leafs took the lead on Nazem Kadris 20th of the year. It was an easy open net tap in power play goal after Ondrej Pavelec misplayed a dump in, had it go off his stick to the front of the net making it 2-1 Leafs. A big goal for the Jets came in the dying seconds of the first as Jacob Trouba out fought James Van Reimsdyk for a loose puck in front of the Leafs net for his 10th of the year. Frolik and Andrew Ladd drew assists. Shots in the first were 12-8 Jets. The second period was all Jets, despite having to kill off two penalties in the first half of the period. On their second power play in the back half of the period, Toby Enstrom with his 10th of the year gave the Jets their first lead of the game. Enstrom walked the line from left to right and fired a screened shot past James Reimer. The goal ties a single season career high for Enstrom, assists went to Ladd and Blake Wheeler. Shots in the second period were14-7 in favour of the Jets. When the Leafs did get chances, Pavelec was there to shut the door. Jets continued their strong play in the third, Coach Paul Maurice having to do some juggling with no Byfuglien. The Jets continued to be first on loose pucks and a great play by Wheeler, using his speed to set up Olli Jokinen for his 18th of the year making it 4-2. Jokinen has now scored in back to back games. The Leafs pulled Reimer with 2:45 remaining but a couple key saves from Pavelec and Wheeler using his speed to negate an icing call, helped the Jets close out the game. Shots in the third were 15-10 Jets and 41-25 Jets on the game. Jim Slater in his 499th NHL game, all with this organization, was key in the face-off department, winning nine of 15. Ladd, Wheeler and Frolik all had two point nights. Since December 1st Wheeler has 50 points in 51 games. He has 17 points in his last 14 games. Jacob Trouba at 26:10 again led the Jets in ice time. After missing the net 18 times Thursday, the Jets missed the net another 17 times tonight. The Jets directed a total of 71 shots at Reimer. Coach Maurice was "really happy" for his team. "We competed for pucks, played with tenacity, the bench was great. We got a bad break on their second goal but the bench stayed up beat and kept talking." Coach Maurice would not elaborate on Kane not playing, other than "coachs decision." "With Byfuglien out we had a hole in our forward lines. Eric Tangradi and Eric ODell gave us some good shifts. Key face-off wins for Jim Slater. Our team believed what they said, they would play for each other. One thing about this group, they care." Jets are home to Minnesota Monday and Boston Thursday (both TSN Jets, TSN 1290), then close out the season in Calgary Friday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290). It was win number 461 of his career, in his 1085th game as an NHL coach. The win snapped the Jets five game losing streak. The Coyotes opened the scoring on a power play, with Oliver Ekman-Larsson getting his fifth of the year, but 36 seconds later Olli Jokinen with his 12th would tie the game, with Dustin Byfuglien getting the assist. Late in the first Zach Bogosian forced a turnover, with Eric ODell notching his second in as many games as the first period ended 2-1. Coach Maurice reconfigured the lines going into the game, with Devin Setoguchi joining Jokinen and Byfuglien. Michael Frolik moved to the right side with Bryan Little and Andrew Ladd, Mark Scheifele centered Blake Wheeler and Chris Thorburn, with ODell between James Wright and Anthony Peluso. Evander Kane remained out of the lineup with a hand injury, while the defence remained the same as it was Saturday. Shots in the first were 12-7 in the Jets favour. The only goal of the second period came from Wheeler, his team leading 17th of the year. Scheifele had the only assist as he continues to lead all NHL rookies in assists with 17. Shots in the second were 13-6 Jets. The Coyotes started the third period on a power play and had some chances but Ondrej Pavelec finished the second with a couple of big saves and made a few more in the third when called upon. The Jets put the game away with Frolik breaking a 10-game goalless stretch with his 10th from Adam Pardy and Little. Setoguchi scored his first in 19 games from Byfuglien and Toby Enstrom on a power play to close out the scoring. For Setoguchi it was his eighth of the year in a game that he was very good in. Pardy how has four assists in his last five games, Byfuglien has three goals and five assists in his last six games, four goals and 11 assists in his last 15 games, and is 18 points in the 24 power play goals the Jets have scored this season. Will Hernandez Jersey. Final shots were 38-19. The Jets directed 73 shots at the Phoenix goal, with 21 missing and another 14 blocked. Byfuglien led the way with six shots on goal, Enstrom led in ice time with 26:21, Jacob Trouba was a plus-three, while Scheifele led the Jets in face-offs winning 14 of 20 for a 70 per cent success rate. Jets went one for eight on the power play but had 15 power play shots in the game. As for the game Coach Maurice liked plenty. "The compete level and energy level of our group. They did the one thing we had talked about that when adversity came to the doorstep that next goal was huge," Maurice said after the game. "The bench didnt get quiet, we stayed positive. It was really, really important that we scored that goal to make it 1-1. They wanted to get out of this, they wanted to make it better." As for the MTS Centre crowd and the atmosphere in the building, Maurice said it was "awesome, very special for me. I tell every rookie, you get one first game in the NHL. Soak it in, enjoy it and thats what I did. It was a special moment for me in my career." Asked what he told the players after the game, Maurice added"I normally dont talk much, but I congratulated them, thanked them, and then cancelled the day off they were supposed to have." Captain Ladd got the game puck and presented it to his Coach. "The puck means a lot. I will give it to my family," Maurice said post-game. As for his new team: "Weve got some speed, weve got some skill, but we still do things at times we dont need to do. We have to get better." He also liked the play of Pavelec saying "he was square and where he needed to be. I felt safe with him." The Jets travel to Calgary for a game Thursday (TSN Jets, TSN 1290) as they are in a stretch of five straight and eight of nine against Western Conference teams. INDIANAPOLIS -- Jacques Villeneuve is ready to make an IndyCar comeback. Logan Paulsen Falcons Jersey . Schmidt Peterson Motorsports said Wednesday it has hired Villeneuve to race in this years Indianapolis 500, 19 years after the Canadian driver first drank the milk in Victory Lane. "IndyCar is growing again and thats why last year when I started watching races again, every time I watched I felt almost angry I wasnt there," the 1995 race winner said on a satellite hookup from France during a news conference held at the teams Indy headquarters. At age 42, Villeneuve seemed content being a television analyst, musician and RallyCross driver. But when Schmidt and co-owner Rick Peterson, also from Canada, made a serious offer, he couldnt refuse. The 500 is scheduled for May 25. Villeneuve certainly has a compelling resume. As an Indy rookie in 1994, he qualified fourth and finished second to Al Unser Jr., and was named the races rookie of the year. The next season, the reigning CART rookie of the year was even better. He qualified fifth at Indy, forced Scott Goodyear into a costly mistake on the final restart and eventually held off Christian Fittipaldi to become the first and only Canadian winner of the race. Villeneuve completed all 400 laps at Indy in those two starts and won the 1995 CART title, too. But after starting 33 races, winning six poles and five races in two IndyCar seasons, Villeneuve had a chance to become an international star. So he headed to Europe and joined Formula One -- the series that made his late father, Gilles, a household name. Like his dad, who died in a 1982 F1 qualifying crash, Villeneuve excelled on the world stage. In 163 career starts between 1996 and 2006, the younger Villeneuve reached the podium 23 times, won 11 races, 13 poles and claimed the 1997 world championship. At that point, American open-wheel racing wasnt even on the radar. His journey back to North America began in 2007 when Villeneuve made the move to American stock cars. Over the next seven seasons, he dabbled in Sprint Cup, Nationwide and Le Mans series as well as sports cars. Villeneuve regained interest in IndyCars last season as he watched how close and competitive the races had become. To him, it reminded him of the series he left almost two decades earlier. Suddenly, he was interested in making a return -- if he could find the right car and the right team. "To get this opportunity is a gift," Villeneuve said. "A lot of people say when you have kids, you slow down. I want my kids to see me race." Schmidt is the winningest team owner in Indy Lights history and already employs two full-time drivers in the better-known IndyCar series -- Russias Mikhail Aleshin and Frances Simon Pageland. In previous years, Schmidt has always found a way to compete at Indy. Getting Villeneuve might be the biggest coup of all for his low-budget team. "Indy is a special place. We go there not to exist but to win the race," Schmidt said. "To see a guy that finished second and finished first there, I dont think hes going to have any problem going back." Villeneuve becomes the fifth 500 winner on this years entry list. The others are three-time winner Helio Castroneves of Brazil, two-time winner Scott Dixon of New Zealand, 2000 winner Juan Pablo Montoya of Colombia and Brazils Tony Kanaan, the defending champ. Another trip to Victory Lane would give Villeneuve two more milestones. He would break Al Unsers record for the longest gap between first and last victories. Unser went 17 years between his first Indy crown in 1970 and his record-tying fourth win in 1987. Villeneuve also would break Gordon Johncocks record for the longest gap between first and second wins at Indy, 1973 and 1982. Villeneuve isnt motivated by records. He wants to win. "Im a racer," he said, explaining he does not plan to retire anytime soon. "Ive got to find ways to get better and better and better, and Im going there with a team thats very experienced and has been very successful as well." Deadrin Senat Falcons Jersey . PETERSBURG, Fla. -- This is how well things are going for the Oakland Athletics: They had only one hit -- and won. "Sometimes thats all you need," said manager Bob Melvin after the As won for the 11th time in 12 games, beating the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 Wednesday night. Brandon Moss hit a solo homer for Oaklands only hit and the Athletics took advantage of walks and two errors to win their fifth straight. "Its not the easiest way to win a baseball game," said Moss, who hit his 10th homer. "But its better than getting one hit and losing." Oakland scored twice on two errors and a pair of walks in the second inning, helping the As win a regular-season game for the first time since at least 1914 while getting only one hit, according to the team. Moss 11th extra-base hit in seven games came off Erik Bedard in the fourth inning. Oaklands fifth straight victory, coupled with Detroits loss earlier Wednesday, gave the As the best record in the major leagues at 30-16. Tommy Milone (2-3) gave up two runs in 5 2-3 innings for the As. Bedard (2-2) pitched 5 1-3 innings for the Rays. Four Rays relievers finished the one-hitter, but the Rays gave up seven walks, one reason the As didnt need much hitting. "Its pretty remarkable. You dont hear about that too often, but we did walk a lot," said Milone. "We worked the count, got on base and put pressure on them. I guess its not that surprising when you look back." The homer by Moss was the first off Bedard since Sept. 16, 2013, breaking a homerless streak of 49 1-3 innings. Throwing errors by Rays shortstop Yunel Escobar and second baseman Sean Rodriguez and two walks in the second inning helped the As score their first two runs off Bedard. "Its really one of the more unusual games to lose," ssaid Rays manager Joe Maddon. Deadrin Senat Jersey. . "We pitched extremely well. Its just an awkward game to give up one hit and lose. The one hit is a home run, and that was the deciding point." After Moss sixth homer in 16 games made it 3-0, singles by Wil Myers, James Loney and Escobar produced two runs for Tampa Bay in the sixth and chased Milone. The Rays, who have lost four straight, loaded the bases with one out in the eighth, but reliever Fernando Abad got Escobar to hit into a double play. "That won us the ballgame right there, in my opinion," said As catcher Derek Norris. Sean Doolittle pitched the ninth for his fourth save. Logan Forsythe was credited with a hit off Doolittle when his infield popup caromed off a Tropicana Field catwalk and landed near the pitchers mound. The umpires ruled the ball had struck the catwalk in fair territory. NOTES: The Rays will activate RHP Alex Cobb (strained left oblique) from the 15-day disabled list Thursday to pitch against Oakland RHP Sonny Gray (5-1). Indias recent home record is also ominous for Alastair Cooks side. They havent lost a Test on home soil since Englands famous series win in 2012-13. In that time theyve won 12 out of 13, the other drawn, winning four series, including the recent whitewash of New Zealand. So who should England be watching out for?Ajinkya Rahane Ajinkya Rahane is Indias highest placed Test batsmen in the ICC rankings Youd be forgiven for thinking skipper Virat Kohli would be the highest-rated Indian batsman in the side, but its Ajinkya Rahane who sits at six in the current ICC Test rankings. The fact that Rahane is Indias No 5 shows the serious depth of talent in their batting line-up. A top-order batsman who lurks in the hosts middle-order, he averages 51 in Tests, plundering eight centuries and nine fifties. Only Joe Root will start the series with a higher average than the right-hander, who is also his sides vice-captain.Rahane is also an excellent slip fielder off both seam and spin bowling. He holds the record for the most catches by a fielder in a match, grasping eight against Sri Lanka at Galle in 2015. If Englands struggles against spin continue, Rahane could have a huge impact in the field as well as with the bat.Wriddhiman Saha Wriddhiman Saha scored a first Test ton against the West Indies earlier this year It cant be an easy task replacing one of your countrys greatest players, but the way Wriddhiman Saha has quietly filled the shoes vacated by MS Dhonis Test retirement has been very impressive.Saha made his debut way back in 2010 as a specialist batsman against South Africa but only managed two more appearances before Dhonis departure during Indias series defeat in Australia in 2014-15.Since then the 32-year-old has appeared in 15 Tests, scoring his maiden century and four fifties at an average of 35.75. Perhaps due to his extended run in the side, this year has undoubtedly been the right-handers best yet, striking 317 runs with the bat to average over 63 from his seven innings.Primarily in the side as a wicket-keeper, Saha is a natural gloveman behind the stumps. His lightning-fast hands have accounted for seven stumping dismissals along with 25 catches.Ravichandran Ashwin Ravi Ashwin is considered the key threat to Englands hopes of a series win Who else? You didnt think we had forgotten him, did you? All eyes will be on Ravichandran Ashwin as he steps up to bowl against an England side whose scars from their demise in Dhaka will still be raw.The off-spinner is currently ranked the best bowler in the world, and claimed career best innings and match figures - 7-59 and 13-140 - in Indias latest Test victory over New Zealand. In the same series he became the second-fastest bowler to take 200 wickets, with only the late Australian Clarrie Grimmett outpacing him.The 30-year-old has the best average of any bowler to have taken over 100 wickets in India, and he seems to be thriving under the captaincy of Kohli. In 16 games under his charge, Ashwin has taken 106 wickets at an unbelievable 18.31 average.Ashwin has also turned himself into a genuine all-rounder. According to some observers, the 102-90 victory over the hapless, short-handed Milwaukee Bucks didnt rate because the expected lopsided blowout didnt materialize. The Bulls, who spent much of the first two months of the season below .500, took issue with that assessment. "Just because theyre the worst team in the league doesnt mean . nothing, really," Taj Gibson said. "Its tough because youre playing against guys fighting for their jobs, fighting for their livelihoods. Theyre going to play hard." Jimmy Butler and Kirk Hinrich had 17 points apiece to lead seven players in double figures, and the Bulls, despite some occasional lapses in the fourth quarter, cruised. Carlos Boozer and D.J. Augustin scored 14 points apiece. Gibson added 13, Mike Dunleavy 12 and Joakim Noah had 11 points and 13 rebounds. "A wins a win," Butler said. "Wins are hard to come by in this league. Every team has a roster full of NBA players; there really are no bad teams. You get a win, youre happy with that." The Bulls have won four straight and six of seven, and remained tied with the Toronto Raptors for third in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls (44-32) face Washington, a possible first-round opponent, on Saturday. "I love the balance of the team," Bulls coach Tom Thibodeau said. "We had seven guys in double figures again. The shot distribution was pretty even, and thats important for us. "I like the balance of our team. Each night it could be someone different." Brandon Knight had 22 points before fouling out with just over two minutes left for Milwaukee. Jeff Adrien added 21 points for the Bucks, who have dropped four straight overall and 12 straight on the road to fall to 14-62 overall. Milwaukee entered the game with just eight healthy players because of injuries and coach Larry Drew decided to play just seven of those until the final 22 seconds of the ggame. Wilt Chamberlain Jersey. "I thought we did a good job fighting back in the second half," Knight said. "Playing hard. Not backing down. "Theyre a great team playing great basketball right now. Theyre a very solid defensive team. Theyre physical. Theyre everything youd want in a team." The Bulls lead was 27-15 after the first quarter and 51-35 at halftime. The Bucks rallied at the start of the second half and pulled within 63-53 midway through the third quarter. But they werent able to trim the deficit to single digits and the Bulls built their advantage back up to 82-62 entering the fourth quarter. The game appeared over, but the Bulls created some suspense by managing to score just three points in the first six minutes of the period to let Milwaukee pull within 85-77. Hinrich finally broke the drought when he hit a 3-pointer with 5:59 left to make it 88-77. "You have to give them credit," Thibodeau said. "I thought they played hard throughout the game. They never went away. Even when we got up 20, they kept battling back. "I think Larrys done a good job keeping them together. Theyve been hit with a lot of things, but theyre still together." NOTES: The Bulls waived rookie Erik Murphy on Thursday and there have been multiple reports saying they are interested in signing a veteran, possibly former Bull Ronnie Brewer. Murphy had been with the team all season, but only played a total of 62 minutes in 24 games. "It was done more so for roster flexibility," Thibodeau said. "I thought he did a great job for us, and I thought he had gotten significantly better." . Bucks C Larry Sanders, currently out with an injury, was suspended for five game on Friday for violating the NBA drug policy. Sanders said in a statement released by the team that he was penalized for using marijuana. "I think the most important thing is that he learns from his mistakes," Drew said. He took full advantage, settling the ball and firing it from just outside the 6-yard box for an easy goal. The Galaxy capitalized on a poor pass by Chris Wingert at midfield to pull the goal back before halftime. If strength at the goaltending position is one of the cornerstones of a successful NHL franchise, Montreal Canadiens general manager Marc Bergevin finds himself in a great place heading into the 2014-15 season. Derrick Favors Jazz Jersey . When starting goaltender Carey Price was injured during last seasons playoffs, it was rookie Dustin Tokarski who took over between the pipes, instead of season-long backup Peter Budaj. Heading into the new campaign with three NHL caliber goaltenders, Bergevin is prepared to let his backup situation play itself out. "Peter Budaj is a proven backup goalie in the NHL and a good one," Bergevin told TSN Hockey Insider Bob McKenzie. "Dustin Tokarski came in the playoffs last year, the sixth game against the Rangers and was extremely good, but again youre going against a guy with the experience and is a really good backup goalie. So thats why you have training camp and well see what happens. We have depth in that position now." So much depth in fact that since either would have to clear waivers to be sent down to the minors, dealing one of them or even beginning the year with both backups on the roster are both in the realm of possibility. "If we feel one guy is really ahead of the other guy, we will make a decision. Maybe a trade might be a possibility, but at the end of the day, also starting with three goalies might be a possibility. I leave it open, but again, Im looking forward to seeing how it plays out during training camp." As for the starter, Bergevin says Price is ready to retake his place between the pipes for the Canadiens. "Hes 100 per cent. Hes ready to go. I mean from Day 1 in camp, hell be ready to go." Another thing youll see Day 1 in camp, after spending the first two years of his NHL career at left wing, the Canadiens are planning to try Alex Galchenyuk at a different forward position. "We will start him in training camp at centre. We want to see where hes at. We know sometimes its harder for a young player to player centre in the NHL, especially down low. But with two years under his belt, we want to evaluate where hes at in the centre position and then well make a decision." That wont be the teams only new look when they open camp; two of the teams long-time key players in Brian Gionta and Josh Gorges have moved on to the Buffalo Sabres. While acknowledging their contributions, Bergevin feels there is more than enough leadership and experience in the players that remain with the squad. "Internally, we felt that it was time for a change as far as leadership was concerned. We felt that our young kids were coming along. Gio was a great leader on this team, did a lot for our hockey team, but obviously theres some hard decisions that at times need to be made and that was one of them, along with Josh Gorges. We feel with the young defenceman coming through the system, they are ready to take the next step. So you have to move forward and sometimes these decisions are not popular, but we feel theyre the best for our hockey club moving forward." With team captain Gionta out of the picture, the Canadiens have decided to go with four alternate captains instead of naming one player as a direct replacement. "Those decisions sometimes are not popular. To me, I dont look at it as not having a captain, but as four guys that can do the job. I dont think you need to have the C to be a leader." "I think our young guys are ready to take that challenge to take the leadership role more." One of those four men that will wear an A, defenceman P.K. Subban, was signed to a lucrative eight-year, $72 million contract in the offseason. Bergevin is not worried about how his superstar will handle the added spotlight. "I think P.K. welcomes the pressure. I think hes changed a lot and matured a lot since Ive been here. Giving him the A, to me, was an honour and well see where he takes it. Time will tell, but we feel P.K. is ready to take the next step." On the subject of his teams next step, Bergevin is not going to accelerate anything, instead the Canadiens general manager is sticking to his plan of building a long-term winner. "We have to draft players and develop them the right way and we brought people into our organization to help that process. Again, you cant speed the process, you got to help these kids and thats the best way for me to build a team thats going to be good enough, not for just one year or two years, but a long period of time." As for this season in particular, the plan is to once again find a place in the post-season tournament. "Our first step is to make the playoffs. Its a tough league; there are a lot of hockey teams that dont make the playoffs that are still good hockey teams. Were back at the bottom of the hill with all the teams that might have, in my opinion, gotten better this year in our conference. Washingtons better, Tampas better, Toronto will be better, a lot of teams will be better and will be a battle." The Canadiens open the season against the Maple Leafs in Toronto on October 8. The Ravens (9-6) were not eliminated from reaching the post-season, but they certainly didnt help their cause. Its really simple, Flacco said. We did a lot of things not very well. The Saints began the day still in contention for winning the mediocre NFC South but now are done. Brees — like Flacco, a past Super Bowl MVP — was picked off twice in a 30-14 loss to Atlanta that stretched New Orleans home losing streak to five games. The Bills and Eagles also are going to miss the playoffs. Both were beaten by bad teams: Buffalo lost 26-24 to Oakland on Sunday, while Philadelphia lost 27-24 to Washington on Saturday. The Chiefs (8-7), like the Ravens, still are holding onto slim hopes of playing beyond next week, but theyll need the right results in Week 17. Once 7-3 and in good shape, Kansas City has been stumbling for more than a month now, losing four of five games, including 20-12 at Pittsburgh on Sunday. In a curious coaching decision by Andy Reid, the Chiefs went for it on fourth down late in the first half rather than attempting a chip-shot field goal that would have made it a one-point game. NEW YORK -- NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell and chief assistant Troy Vincent were told by 11 former players Tuesday that the league must act immediately when someone is accused of domestic violence. Mitch Moreland Jersey . At a 3 1/2-hour meeting to discuss ways to improve the leagues personal conduct policy, the former players also said teams must be held accountable when players misbehave. "One question asked around the room was, when an arrest occurs, do you take them off the field or let them play and let the due process take care of itself?" said Vincent, the NFLs vice-president of football operations. "To a man, they said, Take them off the field, pay them, and let due process take care of itself." At the meeting were Hall of Famer Mike Singletary, plus Matt Birk, Eddie Mason, Patrick Kerney, Willie McGinest, Roman Oben, Marty Lyons, Charles Way, Tony Paige, Scott Turner and Robert Porcher. More weekly meetings are planned among league officials and former players, current players and team owners. "I felt like the clock was on after last Friday and the clock was on that we cant talk to enough people," Vincent said of a news conference at which Goodell announced the league will re-examine how and when it should discipline players for violating the policy. "You begin this discussion with people it means the most to: the players and the owners," Vincent added. "Lets begin by bringing in some of our thought leaders." The NFL has faced heavy criticism of its personal conduct policy after incidents this year involving Ray Rice, Adrian Peterson, Greg Hardy, Ray McDonald and Jonathan Dwyer. Goodell repeatedly has said he mishandled the punishment of Rice for punching his then-fiancee in a hotel elevator. Vincent said the meeting became emotional at times as the players stressed the importance of "making sure everyone is accountable." Singletary, the great former Bears linebacker, pointed out the need to "find who is most influential person in this persons life" and then get the message across that if the player cant accept societal and league rules, "the lines are long behind them, and the people on those lines are ready to step up and assume the responsibility." Vincent said he felt the league got a bit closer to finding solutions to swifter and more emphatic punishments for players who violate the personal conduct policy. "You cant negotiate the game," Vincent said, his voice cracking. "The one thing we all got to fight for ... we are talking about the game and we all got to be all-in. We all have got to answer the questions of where are we today, how did we get here, why is this happening, how do we stop this and manage this? "We dont have time to wait on anybody to give us direction. There is one thing we dont negotiate, its the game." David Ortiz Jersey . Adam LaRoche homered, Ryan Zimmerman had three hits and Ian Desmond added two doubles and three RBIs batting seventh as the Nationals welcomed back Harper with a 7-3 win over the Colorado Rockies. Harper, who missed 57 games because of a torn ligament in his left thumb, went 1 for 3 with an RBI single -- on Bryce Harper bobblehead night. "Having such a deep lineups huge," Harper said. "One through eight, pick your poison because youre going to get a guy who can hit the ball out of the ballpark or hit a double or anything like that." Jordan Zimmermann (6-4) allowed two runs in six innings as Washington won its third straight. The Nationals trailed 2-1 before a five-run sixth. With runners on first and second and one out, Zimmerman doubled to left off reliever Rod Scahill, scoring Anthony Rendon. "I tried to go in on Zimmerman, I missed two times in," Scahill said. "The third time in, it was a little bit more down than I wanted it to be and thats where he can get to that ball. And he got to it." Harper was walked intentionally and Desmond followed with a bases-clearing double into the left-field corner. "Thats the kind of decision-making and pressure we want to apply," manager Matt Williams said. "Bryce is a very good hitter, hed come through earlier in the game against the lefty for a base hit and an RBI and those are the decisions you have to make in that regard." Monday night marked the first time since opening day -- when catcher Wilson Ramos left the game with an injury -- that this starting eight had taken the field. Desmond is 6-for-6 with the bases loaded this season and, for his career is 11-for-17 with 16 RBIs when the batter before him is walked intentionally. "I just try to do the same thing I do every other time," said Desmond, who stole third and scored on Ramos grounder to second. Zimmermann, who finished June with a 3-2 record and a 1.43 ERA in six starts, allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked one. Hed been a victim of poor run support while going 0-2 in his last three outings. "Im just locating really well right noow," he said. Jim Rice Jersey. "Nothing really has changed, just locating well and the sliders really good. (If) I have those two things working together, I can usually string some pretty good starts together." Justin Morneau had three hits for the Rockies, who have lost 12 of 14 and finished the month of June 8-20. Yohan Flande (0-1), making his second start, was charged with three runs on six hits. He left with a 2-1 lead and runners on first and second in the sixth. "I think Flande was throwing the ball really well, but the first two guys got on in the inning," manager Walt Weiss said. "A guy making his second major league start, you want to be out in front of stuff before it happens to a kid like that. "Wasnt real comfortable with the Zimmerman matchup and went and tried to play a matchup that didnt work out." Harper, batting sixth and playing left field, was given a standing ovation when he batted in the second after LaRoches one-out single, but grounded into a double play. In the fourth, however, after Zimmerman doubled with two outs, Harper brought him home with a sharp grounder up the middle. "Its a strong lineup and I dont think theres too many opposing pitchers out there that want to see it," Desmond said. "It was nice to have Bryce back." The Rockies took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on back-to-back doubles by Drew Stubbs and Troy Tulowitzki, a line-drive single by Morneau that moved Tulowitzki to third, and sacrifice fly by Ryan Wheeler to short centre. NOTES: To make room for Harper, the Nationals optioned LHP reliever Xavier Cedeno to Triple-A Syracuse. ... Colorado placed RHP Jhoulys Chacin (inflamed shoulder) on the 15-day DL. Manager Walt Weiss said Franklin Morales will make Chacins scheduled Thursday start, giving the Rockies five left-handers in their starting rotation. Drummond took a charge from Roy Hibbert with 23.9 seconds left and then tipped in the winning shot with 0.3 seconds remaining in a 98-96 victory over the Indiana Pacers. Its been a dramatic turnaround for the Pistons since they waived Josh Smith on Dec. 22. Theyve won 10 of their last 12 games. The seven-game road win streak equals the mark set Jan. 18 - Feb. 22, 2002. Brandon Jennings led the way with a season-high 37 points for Detroit. He went 8-of-13 from 3-point range and made all nine of his foul shots. Drummond had 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Greg Monroe scored 11 and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope scored 10. Hibbert had 14 points, while David West and Damjan Rudez each scored 13 for the Pacers, who have lost three in a row. West converted 1-of-2 free throws with 54.2 seconds left to tie the game, and then Jennings missed a pull-up jumper. Hibbert lowered his shoulder into Drummond, who drew the charge. Then, Jennings drove to the left of the lane and missed as his shot was altered by a leaping Hibbert. Lorenzo Carter Jersey. Drummond, though, converted the tip-in. Indianas last gasp for a tie was thwarted when the ball was knocked away near the basket. Monroe scored nine points in the first quarter to help the visitors to a 23-19 lead. Detroit closed a 10-point deficit in the second to 51-49 at the half. The Pistons held a 79-76 edge going to the fourth. It was definitely a difficult game. It was in our favor. We just have to learn to put games away, Indiana forward Solomon Hill said. Game Notes It was just the second victory in the last 12 regular season visits by Detroit to Indiana dating back to the 2008-09 season ... The Pacers scored 23 points off 18 Detroit turnovers ... BOSTON -- The Red Sox demoted struggling switch-hitting outfielder Daniel Nava and recalled right-hander Alex Wilson on Wednesday. Mickey Mantle Jersey . Nava, 31, was a big part of Bostons run to the 2013 World Series title, but was hitting just .149 with two homers and three RBI when he was optioned to Triple-A Pawtucket before the game against the New York Yankees. Wilson went 1-1 with a 4.88 ERA in 26 games with the Red Sox last year. Boston starters were hit hard recently and manager John Farrell went to his bullpen 10 times in the past three games, forcing him to add a reliever. "Given the number of innings by our bullpen the past four, five days, we needed to add another arm, some help out there," he said before Wednesdays game. "Also, we felt like we need to find a way to get Daniel Nava going again. His struggles at the plate, I think, are evident. Were trying to get him back to seeing him be the player he has in the past." Batting mostly from the left side of the plate in a platoon with Jonny Gomes in left field, Nava hit a career-best .303 for Boston last year with 12 homers and 66 RBIs. "Weve got to get a guy back that was pivotal to our success last year, particularly from the left side of the plate," Farrell said. "Its going to take some at-bats to do just that." Nava had been in the majors for a good portion of the past two seasons, so Farrell knew the news would be tough for the player. "As you might expect, he was disappointed," Farrell said. "I cant say there was disbelief. It was a disappointing message to deliver, given his role last year and the contributions. But in combination for the need for another reliever, while not liking it or deep-down agreeing with it, he knew it was a necessity." Brett Gardner Jersey . Sua Cravens Jersey .J. -- The New Jersey Devils are so bad in shootouts, coach Pete DeBoer doesnt mind seeing his team take chances in the five-minute overtime. It got them a much-needed win Thursday night against the Minnesota Wild after they blew a two-goal, third-period lead. Defenceman Andy Greene scored from in close 2 minutes into the extra period and the Devils snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-3 victory over the Wild in Zach Parises first game back in New Jersey against his former teammates. "Weve asked our D all year to create offence for us," said DeBoer, whose team has lost all eight shootouts this season and an NHL-record 12 straight dating to last season. "I think we have a little more urgency in overtime as a group because of our shootout record. There isnt any secret about that, so you get a little more aggressive." Adam Henrique and Patrik Elias each had three assists and combined to set up Greene. Elias carried the puck from his own zone into the Wild end and sent a pass through the crease that Henrique nudged toward goaltender Ilya Bryzgalov. Greene got the rebound and scored his second game-winner in overtime this season. Greene took a chance on the play. "I actually kick it out of the corner to start the rush and I thought about changing, but then I kind of saw we had a three-on-two," Greene said. "I supported it and the puck obviously squirted through their back door and I got some good lumber on it and put it home." Greene didnt care that the win wasnt pretty. "It doesnt matter at this point," he said. "As long as we get ourselves a chance to get two points in a game, who cares how it happens? Two points is two points." Despite the win, the Devils are five points out of the last playoff spot in the Eastern Conference with 12 games left in the regular season. "I liked how we played tonight," DeBoer said. "As long as we can stay fresh and energized and bring that game, theres no reason we cant keep winning." Michael Ryder, Mark Fayne and Jaromir Jagr also scored for New Jersey, which played with a lot more energy with their playoff hopes fading in the wake of the losing streak. Parise, Mikael Granlund and Matt CCooke tallied for the Wild, who have points in 17 of 21 games. Josey Jewell Broncos Jersey. The Wild, who have lost their last four games that have gone to overtime or a shootout, were limited to 10 shots in the first 40 minutes, but rallied from a 2-0 deficit in the third period to tie the game at 3-all on goals by Granlund and Cooke. Granlund closed the gap to 3-2, beating Cory Schneider with a bad-angle shot from low in the left circle midway through the period. Cooke tied the game with 4:32 to play, deflecting a slap shot by Marco Scandella 2 seconds after a penalty to Travis Zajac expired. Parise, who was booed every time he touched the puck, got the Wild on the scoreboard with a power-play goal when he deflected a shot by Ryan Suter 21 seconds into the third. "To come back in the third period down against these guys, down 2-0 and 3-1, and we were able to claw back and get a point. There is a little bit of a silver lining," Parise said. "Weve got to turn that corner and start winning some of these games that go into extra time." Ryder opened the scoring with 3:02 left in the first, snapping a 23-game goal drought by taking a pass from Elias and ripping a shot past Bryzgalov from between the circles. The Devils had a chance to add to their lead when Wild defenceman Nate Prosser was given a somewhat iffy five-minute major and a game misconduct for elbowing Devils forward Tim Sestito behind the Minnesota net. Minnesota, however, had a great chance to tie the game early in the major when Parise had a breakaway after defenceman Jon Merrill fell at the Wild blue line. Parise skated in alone but Schneider smothered his shot. Minnesota survived the power play, but New Jersey went up 2-0 midway through the second period on Faynes short-handed goal, which was set up by Henrique and Elias. Parises 24th goal of the season cut the deficit to 2-1, but Jagr got his 23rd of the season a little more than three minutes later on a power play. CHICAGO -- Rick Renteria prefers positive reinforcement, usually taking the approach of building up his players. Jason Kipnis Jersey . But following another loss and ho-hum effort on Friday, the new Chicago Cubs manager had seen enough and let the players know their intensity and focus was unacceptable. "I think when Ricky talks and shows emotion, it means something," Darwin Barney said. "He doesnt do it every often. We know hes got our back and hes on our side. When he shows a little fire, it usually works." It certain did Saturday. Barney and Welington Castillo hit two-run homers and Mike Olt added a solo shot as the Cubs broke out of a weeklong offensive funk and beat the Cincinnati Reds 8-4. The win snapped a five-game losing streak for the Cubs. Since scoring four times last Sunday in St. Louis, the Cubs had managed just one run before beating the Reds. Cincinnati had won 16 of the last 17 at Wrigley Field. "I think the intensity was better," Renteria said. "Obviously, the results were better. But had the results not been there, I think the way they went about it was significantly better than yesterday." Emilio Bonifacio had three hits and scored a pair of runs for the Cubs. Junior Lake, Starlin Castro and Justin Ruggiano each drove in a run. Edwin Jackson (1-1) allowed two runs and eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. "He battled and got into a little trouble there," Renteria said. "But all in all, he kept working. ... He showed some intensity and he showed some fight." Tony Cingrani (1-2) gave up three runs in five innings. Jay Bruce went 3 for 3 with a walk for the Reds. "Ive been battling myself the last couple of starts and Im just trying to find that command and my consistent mechanics," Cingrani said. "It just hasnt been working that well the last couple of starts." Bonifacio led off the bottom of the first with a single, went to second on a walk to Lake and came home on a single by Ruggiano. Olt stretched the lead to 2-0 when he led off the second with his third homer of the season, and Castro drove in Bonifacio in the third to make it 3-0. Jackson kept Cincinnati off the board until the sixth, when Devin Mesoraco doubled home Bruce. Zack Cozart made it 3-2 with an RBI grounder. Barney homered in the bottom of the sixth, the first shot of the season for the light-hitting second baseman. Lake added an RBI single later in the inning. An error by Olt at first base on a routine grounder helped the Reds score twice in the seventh. Castillo homered in the bottom half. "The guys hit the ball well when we needed it," Renteria said. "They picked us up a little bit." NOTES: Cubs 1B Anthony Rizzo left the game in the eighth inning with back spasms. He said tweaked it stretching for a pickoff throw and has had similar issues in the past. "I felt a little bit of it (Friday)," he said. "With this, itll probably be gone tomorrow or the next day. Its weird." . Reds 2B Brandon Phillips was back in the lineup after leaving Fridays game in the third inning because of back spasms. "As far as I know he didnt have any lower back issues until he took that swing off (Jeff) Samardzija, so my feeling is once he gets past that he wont have to do anything to maintain it," manager Bryan Price said. ... BALTIMORE -- Orioles slugger Chris Davis will be placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique, a development that came as a disappointing surprise to the first baseman after he expressed confidence he would soon return from the injury. Andrew Benintendi Jersey . Davis left Friday nights game against Kansas City after four innings. He received an MRI on Saturday, and the results indicated that rest would be the best course of action. "A little bit worse than what we thought it was going to be," Davis said Saturday night. "Its kind of crazy because I dont feel terrible. Ive never had anything like this before. I figured it would just be a few days and then wed forget about it." Davis led the majors last season with 53 home runs and 138 RBIs. He has only two homers this season, and it will be a while before he gets to add to that total. "I guess the DL is the best choice right now," he said. "Hopefully things will go well and Ill be able to bounce back quickly." Earlier in the day, Davis expressed confidence that he wouldnt miss more than a few games. "Its definitely disappointing, frustrating," he said. "I do a lot to try and take care of my body and prevent injuries. You play this game long enough eventually youre going to run into something like this. But Im going to stay positive." It is uncertain when the injury occurred, although Davis suspected the muscles in his left side might have been weakened when he dived for groundballs in Boston and Toronto before the Orioles returned home to face the Royals. On Friday night, Davis winced after hitting a flyball in the third inning. He played another inning before manager Buck Showalter removed him from the game. Now, it appears as if Showalter will have to adjust to being without Davis for at least the next two weeks. "Its something we think will take the DL period at a minimum, so well start with that (Sunday)," the manager said. Right fielder Nick Markakis was in the starting lineup at first base Saturday night. Before batting practice, three Baltimore coaches worked with Markakis at the position, going over throws and positioning. The Orioles recalled infielder Jemile Weeks from Triple-A Norfolk on Saturday to provide an extra bat after optioning reliever T.J. McFarland to Norfolk late Friday night. Utility infielder Ryan Flaherty also is expected to get time at first base. Flaherty has been playing third base while the Orioles wait for Manny Machado to come off the disabled list following off-season knee surgery. Asked if subbing for Davis, an All-Star last season, will be imposing, Flaherty replied, "I got stuck trying to do that for Manny the first couple weeks." Machado could play in Class A Frederick or Norfolk on Monday. It appears the Minnesota series on May 2-4 could be the most likely time for him to return to the Orioles, Showalter confirmed. A baby rattlesnake, estimated at about 3 to 4 feet, was discovered in the teams locker room at the AT&T Center about two hours before the game Thursday. It was found by reserve forward Thomas Robinson, who recoiled a few feet after seeing the snake when he moved a bag from his locker. "I didnt (see it)," Portland coach Terry Stotts said. "They said it was a young one." Young or not, guard Mo Williams tweeted that it was a scary experience. Rattlesnakes are a venomous species that can grow up to 8 feet and weigh more than 10 pounds. It takes its name from a "rattle" at the end of its tail that produces a rattling sound when shaken to warn predators of its presence. It is unknown if the rattlesnake found in the locker room made any noise, but Robinsons cries were enough to alert his teammates of its presence. "Well, its bizarre to have a venomous snake in your locker room," Stotts said. "I dont know if its ever happened before. That sounds like an ABA story." The Spurs have a history in the ABA and also with critters in the AT&T Center. The stadium hosts the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo each February and its grounds are used for livestock shows during the three-week event. Spurs guard Manu Ginobili also swatted down a bat that was flying above the court at the AT&T Center on Nov. Bill Lee Jersey. 1, 2009. Ginobili had to have rabies shots after striking the bat with his bare hands. Fortunately for the Spurs, Ginobili wasnt needed to corral the snake. "I think some people here (captured it)," Stotts said, smiling. "They have them on hand at the AT&T Center. They have a specialist." It probably wasnt a good omen for Portland, which is seeking to even its series with San Antonio. "Or a good sign," Stotts said. "We survived." The Trail Blazers will gladly accept any good fortune after being walloped in their first second-round appearance in 14 years. San Antonio led by as many as 31 points and never trailed in rolling to a 116-92 victory on Tuesday. Tony Parker had 32 points and nine assists, as many as Portland had as a team, as the Trail Blazers never threatened the defending Western Conference champions. Stotts was asked if he thought someone from the Spurs had planted the snake to rattle his young charges. "Youre the investigative reporter, you figure it out," Stotts said, tongue in cheek. Stotts was then asked if he considered returning the favour and planting the snake in San Antonios locker room. "That thing, its like Fort Knox over there. You cant get in," he said. Well, the room with officials Joe Crawford, Bill Spooner, Derrick Stafford and Sean Wright is only about 50 feet away from the Blazers locker room. "And I cant comment on the officials," Stotts said, laughing. ORCHARD PARK, N. Philadelphia 76ers Jerseys .Y. -- Terry and Kim Pegula are one big step closer to owning the Buffalo Bills. The husband-and-wife team that owns the NHL Buffalo Sabres had its NFL-record $1.4 billion purchase agreement to buy the Bills approved unanimously by the leagues finance committee on Wednesday. "This is a very big step," NFL executive vice-president Eric Grubman said after announcing the results of the committees vote, which took place at the leagues headquarters in New York. The vote clears the way for NFL owners to formally approve the sale at league meetings on Oct. 7-8. The Pegulas will require three-quarters majority approval from the 32 owners, including the trust overseeing late Bills owner Ralph Wilsons estate. Terry Pegula made a brief statement confirming the committees approval, but declined to go into detail because the sale process is not complete. "As far as I can say, were not NFL owners until that vote is approved, and well have no further comments," he said. The thumbs-up from the finance committee comes a little over a week after Wilsons estate reached a "definitive agreement" to sell the team to the Pegulas. The agreement came a day after the Pegulas were among at least three prospective ownership candidates -- including a Toronto-based group led by rocker Jon Bon Jovi -- submitted formal bids. New York City real estate mogul Donald Trump also submitted a bid. The Bills were on the market after Wilson, the Hall of Fame team founder, died in March. The Pegulas have begun preparing themselves to become NFL owners. A person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press that the Pegulas have relinquished their involvement and are divesting their interest in Five Star Athlete Management, an Atlanta-based sports agency that represents NFL players. The person spoke on the condition of anonymity because the Pegulas have not announced their plans publicly. Terry Pegula acquired the high-profile firm headed by Todd France in 2011. NFL rules prevent owners from being involved in firms that represent league players. Though Terry Pegula is listed as the Sabres owner, his wife oversees numerous areas of the operation. Kim Pegula has played a key role in spear-heading the familys purchase of the Bills, including spending an afternoon touring Ralph Wilson Stadium in August. She is expected to have a high-ranking role with the Bills, working alongside current team president Russ Brandon. Terry Pegula has a net worth valued of over $3.5 billion, and made his fortune in the natural gas industry. In 2010, he completed a deal to sell a large portion of his company East Resources assets for $4.7 billion to Royal Dutch Shell. Pegula has since wasted little time spending a portion of that fortune on his two passions: Penn State, his alma mater, and hockey. He donated more than $100 million to build an ice arena at Penn State to establish the Nittany Lions Division I mens and womens hockey programs. Aside from purchasing the Sabres, Pegula invested $172 million to build a hockey/entertainment complex called HarborCenter across from the Sabres arena in downtown Buffalo. The Pegulas then took a highly aggressive approach in their bid to buy the Bills and ensure they stay in western New York, amid concerns the franchise could potentially relocate to Toronto or Los Angeles. The Pegulas were celebrated by fans attending the Bills home-opening 29-10 win over Miami on Sunday. Many fans carried signs and wore T-shirts paying tribute to the Pegulas. Numerous local businesses have even bought ads in local newspapers thanking the Pegulas for their commitment to the Bills and Buffalo. They also have the support of area politicians, including U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer. "Over the past week, I spoke with a number of owners on the committee, including chairman Bob McNair, and made sure they understood how serious the Pegulas are about keeping the Bills in western New York," Schumer said in a released statement. "I will continue to work over the weeks ahead to ensure that the Pegulas ownership of the team, and the Bills future in western New York, are approved by the rest of the league." Gov. Andrew Cuomo referred to the unanimous vote as an "important milestone." Amir Johnson Jersey . Tuesday night he was finely tuned. Strasburg bounced back from his worst outing of the season with 7 2-3 strong innings, and Jayson Werth had two doubles and three RBIs in the Nationals 7-1 victory over the Colorado Rockies. "I just tried to execute pitches better. I wasnt trying to reinvent the wheel," he said. "I think I wanted to go out there and just trust myself, and just have a little bit finer focus. . I feel like I was able to keep the ball down a little bit." Anthony Rendon added a two-run double for Washington, which has won four straight. Strasburg (7-6) tied his career high by allowing seven earned runs in 4 2-3 innings in his last start -- a loss in Milwaukee -- and was 0-2 with a 7.27 ERA over his last three. Tuesday night he struck out eight and walked one while giving up one run. The Rockies didnt get a runner past second until DJ LeMahieus homer in the eighth. "I think strike one is probably the biggest difference," manager Matt Williams said. "He got ahead of a lot of hitters tonight. His curveball was effective, his changeup was effective. Went deep in the game. He threw a lot of pitches, but he was in command." Strasburg was lifted after walking Corey Dickerson with his 111th pitch. Tuesday night also was a bounce back game for Werth, who was 7 for 52 in his last 13 coming in. He doubled home two runs in the first, another in the fourth and walked twice. "(I) was here late last night watching video with Rick Schu, our hitting coach," Werth said. "Today, had a pretty good mindset going into the game and we made a minor adjustment, just kind of shorten (my swing) up a little bit." Washington has scored seven runs in three straight games, albeit the last two against the pitching staff with baseballs worst ERA. Bryce Harper went 1 for 5 in his second game back from the disabled list, and every Washington starter hit safely except Ian Desmond. "Theres not an easy out one thru eight," Strasburg said. "Its our job as pitchers to go out tthere and keep it close and let our (hitters) go out there and win the game. Ben Simmons Jersey. " Christian Friedrich (0-3) allowed five runs in 3 1-3 innings for Colorado, which has lost 13 of 15. "Every day you cant worry about what happened yesterday," Rockies first baseman Justin Morneau said. "Youre not going to change it. If you start thinking that way, thats when you get in trouble. When you can put today behind us and come back and try and win a game tomorrow and start over, thats what good teams are able to do." Friedrich was making his third start since being called up June 21 and struggled once again, allowing five hits while walking four and striking out four. Overall, hes given up 14 earned runs and 21 hits in 13 1-3 innings. He struggled with his control early and the Rockies were quickly behind. Denard Span and Rendon walked to open the first, and Werth hit a smash past third baseman Ryan Wheeler, scoring both runners. Werth went to third on an infield single by Adam LaRoche and scored on Ryan Zimmermans sacrifice fly to make it 3-0. "Tough to play from behind against Strasburg. We got down early, made it tough," Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. Strasburg helped Washington break it open when he doubled past a diving Brandon Barnes in right with one out in the fourth. Span singled Strasburg to third and moved to second on a wild pitch. Rendon then greeted reliever Chad Bettis with a double to left, increasing the lead to 5-0. Werth singled to score Rendon and later came home on a wild pitch. NOTES: In middle of 20 straight days with a game, Weiss rested SS Troy Tulowitzki and OF Charlie Blackmon. Blackmon grounded out as a pinch hitter in the eighth. ... BAKU, Azerbaijan -- Russia qualified for the World Cup for the first time in 12 years by drawing 1-1 with 10-man Azerbaijan on Tuesday. Olivier Giroud France Jersey . Russia finished on top of Group F with 22 points, one point ahead of second-place Portugal which beat 10-man Luxembourg 3-0 and will go into next months European playoffs for a berth in Brazil. The Russians last qualified for the World Cup in Japan and South Korea in 2002, but under coach Fabio Capello they quickly secured the groups top spot and held it as Portugal once again came up short. "Russia was the best team. They were better than us," Portugal coach Paulo Bento said. "We needed to demonstrate better quality if we wanted the top spot." In Baku, Roman Shirokov gave Russia the lead in the 16th minute from a cutting pass from Alexander Samedov. Vagif Javadov headed in the equalizer in the 90th. Azerbaijan was reduced to 10 men in the 73rd when Maksim Medvedev was given a red card for a rough tackle. Portugal also had to go through the playoffs to qualify for its last two major tournaments, the 2012 European Championship and 2010 World Cup. It was a semifinalist at Euro 2012. The Portuguese have been dogged by inconsistency. They have won just eight of their 16 qualifiers and friendly games since Euro 2012. Their qualifying campaign was spoiled by a 1-1 home draw against Northern Ireland and two draws against Israel. Portugal, playing without suspended Cristiano Ronaldo in Coimbra, struggled to find a way through the Luxembourg defence until Aurelien Joachim was shown a straight red card for a high tackle on Andre Almeida in the 28th. Two minutes later, Joao Moutinho set up Silvestre Varela for his fourth international goal. Nani made it 2-0 in the 36th after Moutinho set him up with a neat backheel. Helder Postiga made it 3-0 in the 78th, making him the top scorer in qualifying with six goals. But the Portuguese missed a half-dozen chances to extend their lead in a game that once again exposed their shortcomings in attack. Postiga and Hugo Almeida both hit the woodwork. Chad Kackert underwent surgery Tuesday to repair a broken ankle and is done for the year, the final blow in a season full of them for the Argos explosive running back. If the Argos can take any measure of comfort into Sundays East Division final versus the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, its that theyve been in this spot for the better part of the season -- having to make do without the player who led them to Grey Cup glory a year ago. "All injuries are frustrating," Argos head coach Scott Milanovich said after Tuesdays walk-through. "From his perspective it was very disappointing, it was a tough year for him with the injuries and finally felt like he was getting healthy, finally felt like he was getting his chance to get in there and do what he wanted to do all year. "Our team is very disappointed for him, but its football, but youve got to rally, and weve got guys who fortunately have played well." Milanovich said he will rely on backups Jerious Norwood and Curtis Steele to fill in for Kackert, and -- regrettably for Kackert -- it wont be the first time. The speedy running back missed 10 of 18 games this season after injuring his knee and shoulder (twice), plus suffering a concussion. The five-foot-eight, 206-pound Kackert was still Torontos leading rusher this season, running for 480 yards on 71 carries (6.8-yard average) with three touchdowns. The former New Hampshire star added 23 catches for 184 yards and a TD. A season hed surely love to forget finally came to a crashing halt Friday afternoon when he injured his ankle at practice at Rogers Centre. The disappointment in losing Kackert is tempered, Milanovich said, by the fact other players have stepped up all season when others have been hurt. "Absolutely, (Norwood and Steele) have played and played well, and played in big games, even on the road, Jerious played in Calgary and Saskatchewan and helped us get wins," Milanovich said. "It would be more nerve-wracking had they not played, and you didnt have the confidence level that theyre going to be in there and execute what youre doing. "As disappointing as it is for Kack, me as a coach and the players as a team have faith in the guys who are going to fill in for him. Were just going to have to move on, unfortunately." Norwood, who is still adjusting to Canadian football, is coming off a big game, running for 102 yards on eight carries in Torontos 23-20 loss to Montreal in the Nov. 1 regular-season finale. Norwood added four catches for 62 yards in replacing Kackert, who in a cruel twist was healthy that night and given the game off to rest for the playoffs. "It was just a terrible accident, and all our thoughts and prayers go out to Kack, but weve got to keep rolling," Norwood said. Benjamin Pavard France Jersey. "Its a team game, when one guy goes down, the next man has got to step up, stick together as a team. Just finish strong." Norwood, who spent five seasons with the Atlanta Falcons and was signed by the Argos on Aug. 14 as an insurance policy, has been by Kackerts house to visit his injured teammate. "I just let him know that I loved him and we loved him as a team, and we support him," Norwood said. "He was actually feeling pretty good. . . hes in a good mood, good spirits, hopefully we can go out and get a win for him." Quarterback Ricky Ray said sometimes unfortunate, crazy things happen in practice, and that it was a big blow to see a teammate go down, especially Kackert with his big-play potential. "Its tough not having him but weve got some guys that got a lot of experience this year when he was out, and guys that we feel can go in and do the job," Ray said. "It would be more difficult if Chad had been there the whole year and played every game and now were trying to find guys that can come in without any experience to fill that role. But weve got guys that got significant playing time this year that can come in and do a good job." Steeles best game came in his Argos debut, running for two touchdowns in Torontos 38-12 romp over the B.C. Lions on July 30. "We just knew the situation, (Milanovich) told us that hes got the guys, weve been in this situation before since early in the year when Kack went down and I had to step up and fill those shoes," the rookie running back said. "He just told us to be ready, prepare like we always have." The broken ankle is a heartbreaking ending for Kackert, who was a major part of Torontos success late last season. Just a couple of weeks ago, on the eve of his most recent return to the lineup -- this time after missing two weeks with a shoulder injury -- he had talked about finding solace from Rudyard Kiplings inspirational poem "If." Two lines of the poem read: "If you can meet with triumph and disaster and treat those two impostors just the same. . ." "(The poem offers) perspective and that if I let anything get to my character, then Ive lost," Kackert said in an interview the day before Torontos Oct. 24 game versus Winnipeg. "I kind of had to take that in and understand thats the one thing I do have that cant be taken away." Kackert was presented with last years Grey Cup MVP after powering through the Calgary Stampeders defence for 133 yards on 20 carries in Torontos 35-22 victory. He added 62 yards on eight catches out of the backfield. Sky Sports golf pundit Gary Christian reflects on a clinical win for Branden Grace at Hilton Head Island, while Luke Donalds performance can mark a turning point in his PGA Tour career. Terrell Edmunds Steelers Jersey . There are some that feel the RBC Heritage deserves more of a prime slot on the PGA Tour calendar rather than the week following the Masters, particularly as it is played at one of the more picturesque locations and is a firm favourite among the players. But I think its a terrific spot for the tournament on the schedule and the strength of the field every year proves that. And, after after the pressure cooker atmosphere at Augusta National, its kind of on a gentle simmer at Hilton Head. Branden Grace closed with a superb 66 to claim a two-shot victory Obviously the tournament would attract a few more star names if it wasnt the week after a major, but I think the organisers - and the PGA Tour - will be happy with the turn out. The awareness of golf among the general public is so high after the Masters, and viewers cant wait to tune in and see Hilton Head Island in all its glory. It was Branden Grace who took the title after a testing four days in blustery conditions on the South Carolina coast, and his final-round 66 was clinical. He played the best on the final day and won the tournament, and thats how it should be. Grace played clinical golf on the final day and was a worthy champion Branden was the stand-out player from the last five groups, and his mindset was particularly impressive. He played aggressively to get the lead, and once in front, his course-management was superb on the back nine. He birdied 11 and 12 and made a number of sensible, stress-free pars - his only blemish coming at the 17th when he bunkered his tee shot and missed a six-footer for par.The Harbour Town Golf Links is a tough course when the conditions are firm and fast like we saw, and its even tougher when you have to chase. But defending a lead by playing cautiously is also easier said than done, so what Branden Grace achieved certainly consolidates his credentials as a world-class golfer. Luke Donald made a welcome return to form and led after 54 holes Luke Donald led after 54 holes on one of his favourite tracks, but he looked a little uncertain at times during his final-round 71 and finished two behind Grace. Maybe that was down to Luke not having been in that situation for some time. When you havent contended on the PGA Tour for that length of time, it doesnt matter who you are - theres going to be an element of doubt when youre trying to get over the line. And when your swing is based on rhythm and tempo like Lukes is, it makes it that much more difficult to maintain down the stretch. He didnt hit the ball as well as he could on Sunday, but he hung in there and a tie for second place will do his confidence the world of good. Donald battled hard in the final round, but he came up just short Luke kept scrambling pars to keep himself in contention, but once Grace was in the clubhouse on nine under, everyone else was effectively playing for second. Luke managed to grind it out despite not being at his best, and that result will go a long way to helping him climb back up the world rankings. His chipping and putting were in good order, and he will take a lot of positives out of the week. Theres nothing like contending for titles on the PGA Tour, and Luke will be better prepared for next time hes right in the mix. The challenge for him now is to keep that momentum going over the next few weeks, and this could be a big turning point in his career. Bryson DeChambeau was hugely impressive as he finished tied for fourth in his first tournament as a pro Bryson DeChambeau finished tied for fourth in his first tournament as a professional having been the leading amateur at the Masters, and I believe this kid is the real deal. He plays with a huge amount of confidence, and he has the chance to do something really special. And his impact on the game could be significant as well. Weve not seen many like him before in terms of his scientific approach to golf, and it has certainly attracted a lot of attention. Having all of your irons the same length is something new in the professional game, and it might not be long before we see others exploring that set-up. DeChambeaus confident and scientific approach to the game has generated huge interest Bryson is fascinating to listen to when he talks about the science and mechanics of his game, and the way he conducts himself is refreshing. He has a huge belief in his methods and his ability, and he clearly feels its only a matter of time before he is one of the leading players on the PGA Tour.He pocketed $260,000 for finishing fourth, and retaining his card for next season is a mere formality. I truly think he can win this year and lock up his playing rights in one go! He has the full array of tools, and he appears to be more mentally prepared for success than most rookies.Grace, Donald and DeChambeau are all in action again this week as we head to San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open, and the TPC San Antonio can be a brutally difficult golf course. When the wind gets up there, its one of the toughest courses on the PGA Tour. Next stop is the Valero Texas Open, played at one of the toughest tracks on the PGA Tour Its not as tight as Hilton Head but, unlike most courses in the United States, theres a lot of trouble to be found if you miss the fairways. Theres scrubland, thick bushes and plenty of trees on both sides, as well as thicker rough than the players are normally used to.At just under 7,500 yards long, its also one of the longer courses on Tour, and if the wind starts gusting at 20mph - which is highly likely - its a really tough test. I played it twice and it was just too much for me. There is much trouble to be found if you stray offline at TPC San Antonio It has been softened a little as a lot of players found it too difficult when it first appeared on the schedule, but it is still a supreme test of ability. Having said that, it is a great mix, with a couple of short par-threes and a few par-fours that can be attacked. Accuracy off the tee is going to be a huge advantage this week, and with the course being so long, well see a lot more drivers hit than at Hilton Head. But if youre going into the greens from the three-inch rough too often, it will be very difficult to be competitive. Also See: How does Brysons debut compare? Yet, when Arsenals players woke up on Saturday morning, the calendar had turned to March and the sun was shining. In Stoke, of all places. The white ball was back, a sign that the harshest conditions were behind us, but also a stark reality that the final stretch of the season was now here. Arsenals journey, in the marathon that is the Premier League season, had so far been a success with them spending much of the race out in front. Many onlookers expected them to hit a wall but here they were in March, now, and the only thing remotely looking like a wall was a brief meltdown as they passed through the red half of Merseyside last month. Four points against Manchester United and Sunderland, plus a win over Liverpool in the FA Cup, had put them back on track, sprinting into March with more and more believing they could be the first across the line when their race is run in Norwich on May 11. Yet, still there were the non-believers. "They have always been an outstanding team and they have great ability within their ranks," said Stoke manager Mark Hughes on Friday before going on to tell us what he really thinks: "but I just felt maybe they wouldnt have the ability to sustain a challenge. I think there are possibly stronger challengers, stronger teams that could take it away from them." Arsenals match with Stoke was only one of 38 encounters that will define their league season but given the time of the year and their history with this opponent, it felt much more than that. It proved to be a test they failed miserably. The result went against them, losing 1-0, as did the decisions, a questionable penalty call and a missed red card for Stokes Charlie Adam amongst them, but if Arsenal want the jury to make a decision on whether they are genuine title contenders, this would not be evidence theyd want to present them. The Gunners were unimaginative in attack, too narrow and slow in tempo. They lacked the creative brilliance that has so often helped them this season and the sharpness in possession. As often happens when they struggle going forward, they look to have too many similar players; ball treasurers who demand it and flock towards it. Oh, how they missed a Theo Walcott, someone in attack who can sprint on to a ball rather than run towards it. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, who is showing he will one day be a fine player, offered this in all-too-brief substitute appearance late on. Stoke, of course, deserved credit for defending well and it should be noted that Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City have also not won there this season, but the concerns for Arsenal didnt start and end with the final result. "Its a defeat that hurts," said Wenger after the match. He added: "The consequences of this defeat could be very difficult to take and we will have to respond very quickly." Wenger is not a man that allows a conclusion to be reached based on one game but the choice of consequence as a word shows he has a concern that the league challenge could slip away. Arsenal ended the day in third place on 59pts after 28 games, four points off leaders Chelsea. On this same weekend four years ago, Wenger also met with the media at the Brittania Stadium after his team had won 3-1 against Stoke (to this day their only victory there in eight attempts). It was a sad day for the Frenchman after Aaron Ramsey had broken his leg but, despite being visibly angry and upset, Wenger admitted that he felt his team was very much in the title race after the win. Chukwuma Okorafor Steelers Jersey. Arsenal ended that day in third place on 58pts after 28 games, three points off leaders Chelsea. Arsenal faded down the stretch, going from an average of 2.07 points per game (PPG) to 1.70 in the last ten games, with 17 added to 58 to give them a total of 75. They finished third, 11pts back of winners Chelsea and they were out of the race with a month to go. Two years earlier, on this weekend during the 2007-08 season, Arsenal led the league with 10 games to go, sitting on 65pts to Manchester Uniteds 64 and Chelseas 61. At the end of the season, United won the title on 87pts (23 in their last 10 games), Chelsea finished second on 85pts (24 in their last 10 games) and Arsenal finished third on 83pts, going from an average of 2.32 PPG to 1.80 PPG (18pts in their last 10 games). With 10 games remaining in the 2010-11 season, Arsenal were second on 57pts, just three points off leaders Manchester United. Once again they faded down the stretch, going from an average of 2.04 PPG to 1.10 PPG, achieving just 11pts in their last 10 games to with a total of 68, in fourth, and 12pts back of winners Manchester United.Arsenal hit their wall while the best got stronger. 2009-10 -- Chelsea 25pts from a possible 302010-11 -- Manchester United 20pts from a possible 30 That is the nightmare scenario that Arsenal fans are concerned about happening again. The fixture list will ensure the Gunners will have their answer to this by early April. Of their last 10 league games, the four most difficult happen next - Tottenham (a), Chelsea (a), Man City (h), Everton (a) with the first three all happening this month, which also includes a trip to Bayern Munich and an FA Cup match against Everton. Talk about March Madness. After that, Swansea, West Ham, Newcastle and West Brom all come to the Emirates while Hull and Norwich welcome the Gunners. Last season, Arsenal achieved just 13pts from these 10 games (using Hull as Reading) losing at Tottenham, Chelsea and Norwich and at home to Man City and Swansea. It is their difficulties against these teams, coupled with their recent history, as title contenders through 28 games, that leads many to believe Arsenals pursuit of the finish line will fade quickly. Ironically, last season they ended the season extremely strongly, gaining 28pts from a possible 30 to qualify for the Champions League. Unfortunately, for them, at this time last season, they were already 24pts behind leaders Manchester United. In the nine seasons since Arsenal last won the Premier League, the average number of points achieved by the champions in the last 10 matches has been 22, with the lowest being 19 coming by two teams who were running away with the league - Chelsea of 2004-05 and Manchester United last season. Should Arsenal get 22pts from their last 10 games, that would give them 80pts, perhaps not enough to win the title but, likely, enough to maintain their challenge into May, and a haul that would show significant improvement considering they havent gotten over the 75. Arsenal players and fans are regularly told they have not won a trophy in eight years and, soon, that needs to change but, above all else, Arsenal finally need to be relevant title contenders into May, no matter who wins the league. Recent history suggests even that moderate, achievable goal could be beyond them. Upon the marathons completion, we wont just know if Arsenal were worthy title contenders, we will know if they were much better than their unsuccessful teams of the recent past. HOYLAKE, England -- Ernie Els hit a spectator in the face with his opening tee shot at the British Open on Thursday, shaking up the two-time champion for the rest of his first round at Royal Liverpool. Kyle Seager Jersey . The mans injury and Els subsequent triple-bogey 7 on the first hole were just the start of his problems. The Big Easy will have a big task trying to stick around for the weekend after carding a 7-over 79, including 42 on the front nine. Els said he was "quite rattled" after he realized the man, who he estimated was in his 60s, was bleeding profusely from a shot that Els said hit the spectator directly in the face. "There was blood everywhere," Els said. "It was like a bullet coming at him. I obviously felt pretty bad about it. It wasnt nice. I was trying to hit it left, and should have told the starters to move the people back on the left side, but I didnt do that." Els said he would make inquiries about the mans recovery. Tournament officials said the spectator was not seriously injured. On the first green, Els missed a bogey putt from about eight inches, bizarrely backhanded the subsequent foot-long putt just past the hole and tapped in for his triple bogey. "Yeah, I was kind of finished. I started to miss short putts, it was just a nightmare," he said. Els said he may have "put the jinx" on his playing partners -- defending champion Phil Mickelson shot 74, and Masters winner Bubba Watson had a 76. Watson said he felt Els was affected by the mans injury. "When we got to the green Ernie said he hit somebody right in the jaw and he said it wasnt good," Watson said. "And you could tell Ernie was shaken up by it. Youre not trying to hit a bad shot in, but when you hit somebody like that its not a good scene, and its very heart-breaking. Im not saying thats why he struggled on that hole, but Im pretty sure thats what it was." There was a bit of comic relief on the 18th where Els had to gently prod a frog away from the tee box with his driver, prompting a smile. Els won his British Open titles 10 years apart -- at Muirfield in 2002 and at Royal Lytham in 2012. He also has two U.S. Open trophies. Hes playing his 24th British Open, where he has seven top-five finishes, and has missed the cut just three times. That total could well be four after Friday. "I played the front nine in 7-over par, (on) a perfect day, and thats just unheard of," Els said. "Hopefully well get it tomorrow." Robinson Cano Jersey . Raji on Friday. General manager Ted Thompson announced the deal Friday. Terms were not disclosed but multiple reports said it was a one-year deal worth $4 million. The 27-year-old Raji was the ninth overall pick in the 2009 draft. He has played in 76 games with 63 starts and has 227 tackles, 10 1/2 sacks and seven passes defenced during his five seasons with Green Bay. After a Pro Bowl-worthy season in 2010, when he had 6.5 regular-season sacks, another sack in the playoffs and an interception return for a touchdown in the NFC Championship game victory at Chicago that sent the Packers to the Super Bowl Raji hasnt had a sack in 35 regular-season games. Last season, he was credited with 36 tackles, but no sacks, forced fumbles or deflected passes. Last fall, Raji reportedly had a long-term contract offer from the Packers that would have paid him roughly $8 milllion per year. Seattle Mariners Jerseys. Now he has reportedly settled for a one-year deal for half that. Raji essentially played on first and second downs last season and had the fewest snaps per game since his rookie year, missing two games with a sprained ankle. "You put up good numbers early in your career, and then when those things dwindle down its like, What happened? Its more to the game than sacks. Since Ive been here, weve been top of the league in sacks and thats whats more important to me. Individual stuff will come. ... ANAHEIM, Calif. Phil Jones Jersey . -- With all the power they possess in the middle of their lineup, the Los Angeles Angels dont usually need home runs from Chris Iannetta. Yet thats what they got in a three-game series with the Kansas City Royals. The veteran catcher hit a tiebreaking homer in the eighth inning Sunday to lift the Angels to a 4-3 victory. He also connected Friday night for their first run in a win. Iannettas latest go-ahead drive sailed into the lower seats in the left-field corner. "I didnt know if it was going to go out or not. I was just hoping it would stay fair. Im glad it did," he said. Reliever Tim Collins (0-3) retired the first batter in the eighth before Iannetta hit his fifth homer of the season. "I just missed. I was trying to go away," Collins said. "You cant miss your spots in those situations. Thats what I did, and thats what happens." Michael Kohn (2-1) pitched a scoreless inning. Ernesto Frieri got three outs for his sixth save, retiring Alcides Escobar on a popup with a runner on third. Garrett Richards, trying to preserve some arms in the Angels bullpen following Saturday nights 13-inning 7-4 loss, pitched seven innings and allowed three runs on five hits. He struck out seven and walked two. "I was prepared to go back out for the eighth, with the bullpen being taxed from last night," Richards said. "But I always try to go deep in game because I know that if I do, Im doing my job. Im going as hard as I can for as long as I can." Royals starter Jason Vargas was charged with a run and three hits over 6 1-3 innings in his return to Angel Stadium, and was lifted after 109 pitches with a 3-0 lead. Kelvin Herrera took over with a runner at first and gave up a single by No. 9 hitter Collin Cowgill on his first pitch. Mike Trout hit an RBI double with one out, Albert Pujols was hit by an 0-2 pitch and David Freese had a tying, two-run single. Pujols tried to score the go-ahead run from second on C.J. Crons sharp single, but Lorenzo Cain -- starting in right field for the first time this season after 28 starts in centre -- threw him out at the plate. Vargas struck out six and tied a career high with five walks. This was the sixth time in 165 big league starts that the 31-year-old left-hander has walked as many as five batters, and the first time since July 20, 2011, with Seattle. "I think he was being extra careful with Pujols and Trout -- and Howie Kendricks also tough," manager Ned Yost said. "Thats a powerful lineup over there. So either he was going to make his pitch, or he wasnt going to make a mistake to those guys and let them drive it out of the ballpark." Vargas walked his first batter in the second, third and fourth innings after giving up a leadoff single in the first, but the Angels couldnt capitalize. He walked his first two batters in the third before retiring Pujols on a double-play grounder to shortstop and striking out Freese. "It was just one of those games where I had to battle through some innings," Vargas said. "I was just missing and wasnt able to get ahead on some of those guys, but I was fortunate to get back into some counts later in the inning and ended up getting out of it." The Royals, who scored first in all three games of the series, took a 3-0 lead in the second. Pedro Ciriaco hit a bloop double that scored Jimmy Paredes, who singled and advanced on Richards first balk in 291 1-3 career innings to that point. Jarrod Dyson reached on a fielding error by Gold Glove shortstop Erick Aybar, and Eric Hosmer followed with a sacrifice fly before Alex Gordon capped the rally with an RBI single. Richards retired his next 11 batters, striking out the side on 11 pitches in the fifth. "Other than the third inning, it was good," Richards said. Vargas was 9-8 with a 4.02 ERA in 24 starts with the Angels last season after four years with Seattle. He signed a four-year, $32 million contract with Kansas City on Nov. 21. NOTES: LF Cowgill made two sliding catches in foul territory, one on Hosmers sacrifice fly. ... The Angels optioned RHP Matt Shoemaker to Triple-A Salt Lake and selected six-year veteran LHP Wade LeBlanc to the major league roster. That approach certainly worked at the Senior Bowl. The Auburn defensive end had two first-half sacks, and Derek Carr and David Fales each threw a touchdown pass in the Souths 20-10 victory over the North on Saturday. Ford, who earned positive reviews from observers during the week, quickly dismissed a reporters suggestion that he made some money in the draft with his performance. "I dont do this for cash," said Ford, selected the games MVP. "I do this for pride. I do this because I really, really want to be great. The money will come. Im just all about perfecting what I do. "Ive still got a lot of work. Ive got the combine and pro day. My life doesnt stop here. Ive got to be consistent." The showcase game for top senior NFL prospects was mostly dominated by the defences. The South racked up five sacks of Virginia Techs Logan Thomas and intercepted three North passes. Princetons Caraun Reid also had two sacks. "Just talking to the linemen, they said these guys are kind of quick coming off the ball," Clemson quarterback Tajh Boyd of the North said. "Youve got to go out there and try to help those guys out." Alabama receiver Kevin Norwood caught a 24-yard touchdown pass from Fales of San Jose State and received the Souths Most Outstanding Player honours. Wisconsins James White scored on a 1-yard run with 6:04 left for the Norths only touchdown. He was selected the Norths MOP after rushing for 62 yards on 11 carries and making five catches for 15 yards. "I wanted to come out here and prove that I could do it all as a running back: Pass protect, catch the ball out of the backfield, run inside and run outside," White said. "I think I did it pretty well this week." Ford, meanwhile, couldnt quite do it all: He batted down a pass in the backfield deep in North territory that would have been aa sure touchdown if hed held onto it. Harry Kane England Jersey. "I could have had a TD," said Ford, who still celebrated the play with a little dance. "I couldnt find the ball. Thats stuff I need to work on." Vanderbilt wide receiver Jordan Matthews briefly interrupted an interview to hand Ford a football. "Game ball, baby," Matthews told him. "I got that for you." Offensively, it looked just like what it was: an all-star game with players trying to get in sync with only a few days of practice. The quarterbacks who made the fewest mistakes won the day as the South built a 20-3 lead. Fresno States Carr started fast with three straight completions on the Souths opening drive. He capped the march with a 17-yard touchdown pass to Colorado State tight end Crockett Gillmore and finished 7 of 12 for 45 yards. "He was so open, I just wanted to get the ball in his hands and let him go," Carr said. Eastern Illinois quarterback Jimmy Garoppolos first two drives ended with field goals of 50 and 39 yards by Auburns Cody Parkey. Garoppolo, MVP of the East-West Shrine Game out of Tony Romos alma mater, was a late addition to the roster after Alabamas AJ McCarron declined an invitation. Garoppolo was 6-of-11 passing for 32 yards. Miamis Stephen Morris was 10 of 18 for a game-high 89 yards but also was intercepted twice. Boyd was 7 of 16 for 31 yards with an interception. Thomas only got five passes off, completing four for 17 yards. "I dont think I had much time to do anything with it," he said. Ford, who also had two sacks in the BCS championship, Parkey and Chris Davis all made a big impact a few weeks after their Auburn team lost to Florida State in the title game. Davis had an interception. They left this one in a better mood. "It was a great week for Auburn," Davis said. "Any time you get to come to an event like this, you want to showcase your talent. I think for the Auburn team, we did that." BOSTON -- Justin Florek and Reilly Smith scored in a three-minute span in the first period and the Boston Bruins evened their playoff series with a 4-1 win over the Detroit Red Wings in the Game 2 on Sunday. Dorian ODaniel Jersey . Showing more spark after not taking enough challenging shots on goal in their 1-0 loss Friday night, the Bruins had 18 shots in the first period after managing just 25 in the entire opener. Luke Glendening cut Bostons lead to 2-1 at 13:20 of the second period before Milan Lucic scored late in the second and Zdeno Chara added a power-play goal early in the third. Game 3 of the best-of-seven series between the top-seeded Bruins, who won the Presidents Cup with an NHL-high 117 points, and eighth-seeded Red Wings is set for Detroit on Tuesday night. On Sunday, Boston didnt take its first shot until 7:28 into the opening period. And it went in. Florek, a rookie wing filling in for the injured Chris Kelly on the third line, scored after Detroit goalie Jimmy Howard and defenceman Brendan Smith missed connecting on a pass. Howard came out of his crease to collect a loose puck and passed it toward Smith, who was skating back along the right boards. But the puck bounced off Smiths right calf and into the circle where Florek shot quickly before Howard could get back. It was Floreks first career playoff goal after he scored one goal in four regular-season games. The Bruins made it 2-0 at 10:35 on a power-play goal by Smith, whose brother Brendan plays on the Wings. Howard stopped Patrice Bergerons shot from the blue line and Loui Eriksson poked the puck between Howards legs. Smith then skated behind Howard and tapped it in. Glendening positioned himself in the right spot, just in front of Boston goalie Tuukka Rask to score his first career playoff goal. Darren Helms shot from the top of the right circle hit Boston defenceman Johnny Boychuks stick just in front of the crease. The puck went up, hit Glendening in the chest and got past Rask. The Bruins top line, which had struggled, restored the momentum about five minutes later on a well-co-ordinated play. Lucic carried the puck into the middle of the offensive zone as Jarome Iginla cut behind him. Lucic dropped the puck for Iginla and continued toward the net where he received a return pass across the slot from Iginla. Lucics hard shot from five feet hit Howards stick and trickled over the goal line at 18:16. Lucic was fined $5,000 but not suspended Saturday for spearing Detroit defenceman Danny DeKeyser during the opener.
